composition / essential oils

litsea cubeba essential oil (exotic verbena, known as ‘lemon litsea’)

exotic verbena is an evergreen shrub, about one metre tall, that grows in tropical areas. Native to Asia, it is mainly cultivated in China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Taiwan and India. In China, its dried flowers are placed in homes to bring calm, serenity and peace. The Romans considered it a sacred plant used to purify and perfume altars dedicated to Jupiter; in the Middle Ages, it was said to be used in love potions. Its leaves produce berries from which an oil with a sweet, lemony scent reminiscent of lemon verbena or lemongrass is extracted through steam distillation. Exotic verbena essential oil is known for its relaxing properties in cases of temporary depression. When diffused, it brings calm and serenity, creates a joyful atmosphere and promotes harmony in the indoor air. It also has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial properties, and acts as a digestive tonic, purifier and cleanser. It is used in cases of stress, anxiety, low energy, sleep disorders, muscle pain, tendonitis and rheumatism, as well as in cases of loss of appetite, parasites and fungal infections. It is an excellent insecticide. In beauty care, it purifies oily and acne-prone skin. Lemon litsea essential oil can be used in massage oils, beauty and bath products, aromatherapy diffusers, rubs and aromatic drinks, diluted in other essential oils or vegetable oil.

eucalyptus essential oil

this evergreen tree with refreshing foliage and silvery bark is native to Australia. There are nearly 700 varieties of eucalyptus, from houseplants to trees reaching 150 m, from desert species to tropical forest species. Eucalyptus is known for its purifying properties and is one of the most commonly used plants in winter aromatherapy diffusers. Its essential oil, obtained by distilling fresh or dried leaves, has a fresh, sweet scent. Eucalyptus essential oil cleanses and purifies the air; it is a general and respiratory antiseptic that helps to clear the respiratory tract. It helps to combat bronchitis, flu and ENT disorders and calms coughs. It is also antibacterial and antiviral, supports the immune system and can help with muscle or joint pain. Energising and an excellent mental tonic, it is recommended for fatigue and lack of energy, as well as for allergies and diabetes. In beauty care, it is used in skincare products and soaps to purify and mattify blemished skin. On its own, it can be used for olfaction, inhalation and diffusion, or in synergy with massage oils, beauty treatments and bath products.

sweet orange essential oil

the sweet orange tree, native to China, is an evergreen shrub with deep green foliage that releases citrus essences when rubbed. This tree, which grows to about 3 metres tall, can live up to 400 years in a temperate climate with mild winters. The white, highly fragrant flowers produce sweet oranges from which essential oils are extracted. Around 100 varieties are cultivated, out of nearly 2,000 existing varieties. Oranges have been recognised for their medicinal and purifying properties since the 16th century. In the past, the fruit was studded with cloves to repel moths and perfume cupboards. Orange essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the fresh zest; it is a yellow oil with a fresh, sweet, fruity scent. It is known for its cleansing and purifying properties. It also reduces digestive problems; a nervous system sedative, calming and mildly hypnotic, it helps combat stress, anxiety and insomnia in children and adults, stomach ache, nausea and colic in infants. Widely used in aromatherapy (especially in diffusion), alone or in synergy, it is also used in friction, inhalation, massage oil, aromatic drinks and baths, as well as in beauty products to add a fruity note.

mandarin essential oil

the mandarin tree is a small evergreen tree with bright green foliage, native to China, Vietnam and Japan. The mandarin comes from its small white flowers. Rich in vitamin C, it is an ideal winter fruit for supporting immunity. Less acidic than other citrus fruits, its sweet and highly fragrant flesh makes it popular for home fragrances, air fresheners, sanitizers and antiseptics. Its name is said to come from the robes worn by mandarins. Mandarin essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel. A nervous system sedative, calming and mildly hypnotic, it helps combat insomnia in children and adults, stress, nervousness and agitation, and reduces anxiety and temporary depression. An antispasmodic, it helps relieve stomach aches, indigestion and constipation, calms hiccups and is beneficial during pregnancy and for infant colic. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that aid digestion. Its components have a beneficial effect on the liver and gallbladder and can help prevent metabolic disorders (diabetes, obesity, cholesterol) and decongest the liver. A skin tonic, it is useful for acne-prone skin, circulation, water retention and cellulite. Use: rubbing, diffusion, aromatic drink and bath, alone or in synergy.

sweet mint and peppermint essential oils

there are many varieties of mint, originating in the Near East, now grown mainly in France, England and North America, in humid and sunny environments. Mint essential oil is obtained by distilling the whole plant. Sweet mint and peppermint oils have similar properties. Sweet mint is known for its digestive, antibacterial, tonic and aphrodisiac properties; it also aids healing and stress management. It should only be used in aromatic drinks and in diffusion: never in rubs or baths (it has a marked cooling effect on the skin). Peppermint, in a hot digestive drink, is a good substitute for coffee.

palmarosa essential oil

palmarosa, or rose geranium, is a herbaceous plant with long leaves that give off a rose-like scent when rubbed. Native to India and Vietnam, it belongs to the lemongrass family and is widely used in Ayurveda. Its essential oil, obtained by distillation, is a powerful purifier. Its fresh, floral scent makes it a popular ingredient in beauty products. Antibacterial, antifungal, healing, antiviral, immunity-boosting and uterine tonic, it is used to treat fungal infections (digestive, gynaecological, skin), urinary tract infections, sinusitis and ear infections. Purifying and cleansing, it is recommended for acne, eczema, oily or dry skin, wrinkles and scars, as well as for wounds (cuts, bleeding), excessive perspiration, sensitive scalps and dandruff. It also helps against water retention and cellulite and promotes slimming. Useful for stress, anxiety and fatigue, it also has aphrodisiac properties (stimulating massage oils). Uses: diffusion, massage oil in synergy, aromatic drinks and baths.

benzoin essential oil

benzoin is a resin extracted from various Styrax plants, a shrub native to Indochina. It is used as an ‘oriental’ note in perfumery and as incense in several North African countries. Benzoin essential oil, with its vanilla scent, is anti-inflammatory and analgesic, a respiratory expectorant, antispasmodic and healing. It is also used to treat anxiety, depression, insomnia, difficulty falling asleep and stress. Uses: massage oil, diffusion and inhalation.

vanilla essential oil

vanilla is a spice derived from certain tropical vine orchids. Vanilla plants are vines with green stems, evergreen foliage and highly fragrant white trumpet-shaped flowers, which can grow up to 15 metres tall. Native to Mexico (now also produced in Réunion, Madagascar and Polynesia), it was brought to Europe by the conquistadors in the 15th century. The Aztecs used it in flavoured chocolate drinks. To develop their full aroma, the pods are harvested, blanched, steamed, sun-dried and then refined in crates. Vanilla oil (oleoresin) is extracted from the pods by distillation. It is believed to have relaxing, nerve-stimulating, aphrodisiac, tissue-regenerating and, above all, fragrant properties. It is used to combat stress, depression, sleep disorders, digestive problems and sexual fatigue. In beauty treatments, it has healing and highly nourishing properties. Uses: massage oil, diffusion and inhalation.

grapefruit essential oil

grapefruit (citrus paradisi) comes from a natural hybrid between the orange tree and citrus maxima (pomelo). It is a fruit with a fairly thin, yellow or pink rind and very juicy, yellow and bitter or pink flesh, which is sweeter and more sugary depending on the variety. The essential oil is obtained by expressing the zest and has a very fruity and sweet fragrance. It is known for its antiseptic and detoxifying properties; it refreshes and purifies the air, stimulates or soothes the nervous system and relaxes. Recommended for stress and anxiety to help you relax, it facilitates communication. Useful for muscle pain and fatigue, water retention and cellulite, or obesity, it is also used in air fresheners and surface disinfectants. Uses: diffusion, massage oil, beauty treatments and aromatic drinks in synergy.
